My 2016 fitness year
2016 has been an incredible fitness year for me! There has been ups and downs, amazing experiences and devastating failures. I think it's fair to say, that even though I've turned 33 this year, I'm in the best shaped of my life! I am stronger and faster than ever, and I'm still working on getting stronger and faster.
A year ago I decided to apply for Denmark's Ninja Warrior. This was the decision that made me work harder at the gym. For months I worked on building up strength for Ninja Warrior. Most of my focus was on lifting waits and climbing, I didn't do much cardio. Then Denmark's Ninja Warrior was replaced with Team Ninja Warrior Denmark, and I got to be a part of the show with my two awesome teammates (read my Team Ninja Warrior blog here).
Team Ninja Warrior let me to begin a new adventure, Obstacle Course Racing. In August I qualified for OCR World Championship in Canada, which was held in October. It didn't go the way I wanted, but it motivated me to work hard for the upcoming 2017 OCR season (read about my OCRWC experience here). In November I qualified for OCRWC 2017, this time I know what I got myself in to and will work hard to finish strong at the event.
I've been running on and off for most of my life. Since I was a teenager, I have wanted to run 5km in less than 20 minutes. In November I had my first attempt to get under that magic number. I ran in 20.08 min, it was a new PR for me, but I was still disappointed as it was SO close to my goal. Today, on the last day of 2016, I ran another 5km race. This time I finished in 19.55min!!!! This is one of (if not my biggest) sports/fitness achievement ever. It's always been a goal of mine, and today I reached it, happy doesn't even begin to describe how I feel! It was a perfect way to end the year, as neither Team Ninja Warrior or OCRWC went the way I had hoped, it was great to reach one of my major goals! It definitely shows that I'm moving in the right direction!
I'm excited to see what my 2017 fitness year will bring. My major fitness goal is to finish in top 10 in my age group at the OCRWC 2017. I already qualified, so now I'm working on getting stronger, faster and leaner. Some of my other fitness goals are:
- To be able to do 10 pull ups
- To be able to do 1 muscle up
- To do Flying Monkey in a race
- To be able to do nunchucks
- To finish in top 3 at a Nordic Race event
Deadline December 31st 2017!
What are your fitness goals for 2017?
Happy New Year! :-)
